The initiative is to monitor and reduce the transportation CO2 emission for each student and staff. The school has a very efficient GPS based school bus tracking system. This was leveraged to merge it with the database of the school children travelling in school buses to obtain their individual CO2 emission. For the students commuting in private vehicles, they were asked to report the travel distance, fuel used, mileage and number of students pooling the vehicle to calculate their individual CO2 emissions. An individual student can see his CO2 emission for transportation inside the parents’ login ID of the school.

The process incentivizes individuals to lower their emission levels by shifting to a mode with lower emission. For example those with high consumption larger vehicles can shift to vehicle with lesser emissions and onward to electric vehicles. Those using individual vehicles can shift to car pooling and onwards to school buses.

The school proposes to recognize the students who achieve the greatest reduction in their transportation emission in a year.

This strategy aims to involve every student and faculty in the campaign and also simultaneously educate them about their emissions and motivate them to reduce it by adopting a better travel option. This data set will also provide the school with an accurate base data for the emission levels. The school has built a software application that will take relevant data and produce the emission figures on dates fixed according to the school calendar. The application being prepared is generic in nature and can be used by any other institution by using own data.
